47% of Facebook Walls Contain Profanity

Posted 2011-05-24 23:28:28 | Views: 13,051

Well, dang.

A new survey conducted by Reppler, an online service that helps "keep your social reputation safe," unveiled new data that shows 47% of Facebook users have profanity on their walls. Scanning 30,000 user profiles, the study found that 80% of users have at least one post or comment from a friend containing swear words.

In terms of the most used phrases, the "F"-bomb and its derivatives lead the charge, with s*** coming in second, and the "B"-word coming in a distant third. Naturally, none of this should come as a surprise, but it raises interesting questions about online identity.

The massive success of LinkedIn's initial public offering would indicate that, yes, there is a need for a space where users can maintain a squeaky-clean professional persona. In fact, one of LinkedIn's primary lures is that it provides an outlet for its users to put their best feet forward while inviting the evaluations of prospective employers.

On the other hand, Facebook's long been a proponent of openness on the web, with recent initiatives indicating that it's looking to scale back its role as cyber police, at least in terms of free speech. But potential and current employers have long used social media to monitor and track employees, with a 2009 study indicating that 45% use Facebook and Twitter to screen job candidates, and that number's likely similar today, if not higher.

And before everyone get's all huffy about online privacy and the business ethics of having their bosses scan their profiles, stop and ask yourself this question first: Wouldn't you do the exact same thing?

Judge Denies Tattoo Artist's Request to Halt Release of 'Hangover Part II'

Tattoo Artist Suing "Hang Over 2"

The federal judge presiding over a copyright infringement lawsuit brought against Warner Bros. by the man who created the distinctive tattoo worn by Ed Helms in The Hangover: Part II has declined to halt the Thursday release of the film.

"We are very gratified by the Court's decision which will allow the highly anticipated film, The Hangover: Part II to be released on schedule this week around the world,” Warners said in a statement. “Plaintiff's failed attempt to enjoin the film in order to try and extract a massive settlement payment from Warner Bros. was highly inappropriate and unwarranted."

S. Victor Whitmill, the tattoo artist who created the original mark for boxer Mike Tyson, who appears in both Hangover films, sued April 28 seeking an injunction and damages for copyright infringement. Warner Bros. executives Dan Fellman and Sue Kroll testified at a hearing Monday that issuing an injunction against the film's release would inflict irreparable harm on the studio, which has spent more than $80 million to market the film.

U.S. District Court Judge Catherine D. Perry. agreed with the studio, denying the injunction but allowing the case to move forward.  She did say that Whitmill had a strong likelihood of ultimately succeeding on the merits of the case but that the hardship on the studio and the third-party theater owners who planned to screen the film this weekend would simply be too great.

She also said she was willing to hold an expedited trial on the issue of liability and consider a request for a permanent injunction, which could stop the film's distribution (on DVD, cable and other outlets) at a later date.

In the hearing Monday it was said by a Warner Bros. lawyer that Whitmill asked Warners for a $30 million settlement, but Whitmill lawyers argued to the judge that the $30 million demand came up only after Warners asked for an assessment of what the studio's potential damages exposure might be.

Now, without the leverage of a possible injunction hanging over the studio's head, the tattoo artist is unlikely to be offered a fraction of that to settle the case. But the litigation is still alive and will now proceed as a straight infringement action, with Whitmill required to first show that he has a valid copyright in the image and that the one depicted in Hangover 2 is substantially similar.

Tattoo artist sues Warner Bros, not wanting the film to be released for copyright infringement. But, the court decided to let the film be released as schedued.

David Bowie on being a selfish artist

''I think it all comes back to being very selfish as an artist. I mean, I really do just write and record what interests me and I do approach the stage shows in much the same way.''

Lindsay Lohan Frees her assets in Miami Beach

Apparently, Lindsay can't keep her top on in Miami.

The actress suffered another wardrobe malfunction yesterday when a crashing wave removed her bikini top as she cooled off in the Miami surf. And despite clutching her arms across her chest - she could not stop her assets spilling out. The troubled actress - who's currently serving 480 hours community service for stealing a necklace - gasped when she was struck by the wall of water.

On Sunday, the Mean Girls star flashed guests at the Raleigh Hotel when a gust of wind blew her dress open as she stood on the rooftop.

The eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano sends thousands of tonnes of volcanic ash into the sky on May 23 above Iceland. The cloud has forced the closure of Icelandic airspace and spread fears of a repeat of the global travel chaos that was caused by last year's Icelandic eruption, although authorities insist that this Grimsvotn poses a lesser threat.

Patkau Architects: Winnipeg Skating Shelters

Posted 2011-05-23 13:56:15 | Views: 13,537

Canadian studio patkau architects has designed a grouping of temporary shelters to provide ice-skaters with relief from the harsh winter winds.

A cluster of organic, cone-like structures, each accommodating only a few people at a time, gather in the center of the city where the red and assiniboine rivers converge. Standing with their backs to the wind, the units develop a series of protective environments and interior spaces that shield ice-skaters from the fierce winds and temperatures, which can feel like minus fifty degrees celsius at times.

Each shelter, made from two layers of thin, flexible plywood, is given strength and structure through its characteristic bends and timber frame. inside, a timber floor and plywood seating engulf the visitor and aim to convey a sense of warmth and comfort.
