Julian Schnabel Invites Young Artists to His Studio

Posted 2012-09-26 08:07:23 | Views: 14,634

Painter, filmmaker, architect, and proto-James Franco polymath Julian Schnabel recently received a group of young artists from the YoungArts program at his West Village studio, a meeting of young and old minds that was recorded in the latest episode of HBO’s Masterclass. The segment (embedded below) ends with the venerable artist taking the teens out for pizza and bluntly telling them: “If you’re scared, you’re fucked.”

Schnabel’s closing scare-’em-straight speech is impressively brutal. “Your parents have probably done most of the work already,” he tells the group of young aspiring artists. “If your parents loved you and were supportive and made you think that you could do something that nobody else does, that’s a lie.”

Happily, the students land some punches too. “Schnabel came up in my art history class as being an anti-modernist, neo-conservative postmodernist,” says young sculptor Elizabeth Eicher. “He was actually one of the ‘bad guys.’

The Art of Brandon Opalka

Posted 2012-09-25 16:58:09 | Views: 15,575

Brandon Opalka was born in Virginia, and moved to South Florida in his early teens. Graffiti was the first visual form that attracted him. Mark-making with spray cans defined his middle and high school years. After spending one semester at IFAC (International Fine Arts College), Opalka left to make art full-time. He worked with the collective FeCuOp (with artists Christian Curiel and Jason Ferguson). As a self-taught painter, Opalka makes art on walls and canvases. As such his exhibition history contains some walls that cannot be listed here. He has had one-man exhibitions at Rocket Projects, Ingalls & Associates and Dorsch Gallery. His work has been curated into major group exhibitions at Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo, Japan; Whitebox, New York; and Bass Museum of Art, Miami, FL. He has exhibited extensively in Miami. Notable venues include Casa Lin, Open Space, Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, The House and Locust Projects. Currently, he is exhibiting in the Salon de Notre Societe show in the Primary Projects in Miami, FL. He lives and works in Miami.

Kristy Leibowitz: Journalism Meets Art

Posted 2012-06-25 09:50:11 | Views: 15,321

Photographer Kristy Leibowitz boldly trains her eye on artists and models, capturing their essence and character in ways that surprise, shock and charm. Wonderland talks to her about her tabloid and Daily Mail roots, and how a Busta Rhymes music video kickstarted her photography career.

KRISTY LEIBOWITZ

JOURNALISM MEETS ART

First off, tell us how you went from photojournalist to photographer and artist.

I kind of fell into the journalism when I had an internship at a music video production company while I attended Parsons School of Design. I was on set for the Busta Rhymes music video and a shooting broke out where the bodyguard was shot and killed. I had photos from the set which I sold to the NY Post and then to the NY Daily News. This is when is all started and I ended up working for all the NY newspapers shooting spot news and features. Later I transferred to the Daily Mail Online, and then to Bloomberg.

Then in 2006, The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black gave a conceptual concert, entitled Sound of Magic. I photographed [lead singer] Kembra Pfahler’s performance and sent them to Jeffrey Deitch. He loved them and hired me to shoot all the events at the gallery. He made many coffee table books with my photos and even included my work and collaborations with artists like Francine Spiegel in their solo shows at Art Basel and the Armory Show. I loved being able to shoot all these fields and switch it up.

Can photojournalism be art and can artistic photography be journalism?

Of course. Art can be anything, any medium, any genres. A great image can very well be artistic and a form of documenting what is happening. I capture what is happening at an event as honestly as I would capture a news story. Some of the most amazing journalistic photos are some of the most incredibly artistic ones. The photographer Richard Mosse, who is definitely one of my favorite journalists, does this very well, in his new work entitled “Infra.”

What characterizes the photography of Kristy Leibowitz?

I think my work has a distinct look to it. Everything is edgy and artsy, saturated and full of energy. It’s very energetic and moody as well.

Vincent Van Gogh's Palette

Posted 2012-06-25 06:21:24 | Views: 15,460

In a letter to his brother Theo in 1882, Van Gogh wrote:  "There are but three fundamental colours – red, yellow, and blue; 'composites' are orange, green, and purple. By adding black and some white one gets the endless varieties of greys – red grey, yellow-grey, blue-grey, green-grey,orange-grey, violet-grey. It is impossible to say, for instance, how many green-greys there are; there is an endless variety. But the whole chemistry of colours is not more complicated than those few simple rules. And having a clear notion of this is worth more than 70 different colours of paint — because with those three principal colours and black and white, one can make more than 70 tones and varieties. The colourist is the person who knows at once how to analyze a colour, when it sees it in nature, and can say, for instance: that green-grey is yellow with black and blue, etc. In other words, someone who knows how to find the grays of nature on their palette". David Bowie: The Passionate Painter

"I felt I really wanted to back off from music completely and just work within the visual arts in some way. I started painting quite passionately at that time."

- David Bowie
