John Carpenter's original concept was to have a different story for each of the Halloween movies.
His first Halloween movie was about a metal patient named Michael Myers who had escaped. After the success of the first Halloween film Carpenter wanted to continue with other stories that all had the Halloween theme.
John Carpenter didn't want to do yet another Michael film. He never wanted to do a second one because he felt the story had already been told, but with enough studio pressure, he gave in. But sure enough he decided to kill off Michael Myers in the second film, which he does. With Myers out of the way Carpenter could start his Halloween anthology films with Halloween III :Season of the Witch.
After Halloween III opened up to disappointed fans who were looking forward to the return of Michael Myers, the studio forced Carpenter to bring Myers back, and so John Carpenter quit.
Today Fans of the Halloween franchise debate on whether or not Halloween III should be considered in the series.
