The United States experienced major waves of immigration during the colonial era, the first part of the 19th century and from the 1880s to 1920. Many immigrants came to America seeking greater economic opportunity, while some, such as the Pilgrims in the early 1600s, arrived in search of religious freedom. From the 17th to 19th centuries, hundreds of thousands of African slaves came to America against their will. The first significant federal legislation restricting immigration was the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. Individual states regulated immigration prior to the 1892 opening of Ellis Island, the country’s first federal immigration station. New laws in 1965 ended the quota system that favored European immigrants, and today, the majority of the country’s immigrants hail from Asia and Latin America.
MMIGRATION IN THE COLONIAL ERA
From its earliest days, America has been a nation of immigrants, starting with its original inhabitants, who crossed the land bridge connecting Asia and North America tens of thousands of years ago. By the 1500s, the first Europeans, led by the Spanish and French, had begun establishing settlements in what would become the United States. In 1607, the English founded their first permanent settlement in present-day America at Jamestown in the Virginia Colony.
Some of America’s first settlers came in search of freedom to practice their faith. In 1620, a group of roughly 100 people later known as the Pilgrims fled religious persecution in Europe and arrived at present-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, where they established a colony. They were soon followed by a larger group seeking religious freedom, the Puritans, who established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. By some estimates, 20,000 Puritans migrated to the region between 1630 and 1640.
A larger share of immigrants came to America seeking economic opportunities. However, because the price of passage was steep, an estimated one-half or more of the white Europeans who made the voyage did so by becoming indentured servants. Although some people voluntarily indentured themselves, others were kidnapped in European cities and forced into servitude in America. Additionally, thousands of English convicts were shipped across the Atlantic as indentured servants.
Another group of immigrants who arrived against their will during the colonial period were black slaves from West Africa. The earliest records of slavery in America include a group of approximately 20 Africans who were forced into indentured servitude in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619. By 1680, there were some 7,000 African slaves in the American colonies, a number that ballooned to 700,000 by 1790, according to some estimates. Congress outlawed the importation of slaves to the United States as of 1808, but the practice continued. The U.S. Civil War (1861-1865) resulted in the emancipation of approximately 4 million slaves. Although the exact numbers will never be known, it is believed that 500,000 to 650,000 Africans were brought to America and sold into slavery between the 17th and 19th centuries.
IMMIGRATION IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY
Another major wave of immigration occurred from around 1815 to 1865. The majority of these newcomers hailed from Northern and Western Europe. Approximately one-third came from Ireland, which experienced a massive famine in the mid-19th century. In the 1840s, almost half of America’s immigrants were from Ireland alone. Typically impoverished, these Irish immigrants settled near their point of arrival in cities along the East Coast. Between 1820 and 1930, some 4.5 million Irish migrated to the United States.
Also in the 19th century, the United States received some 5 million German immigrants. Many of them journeyed to the present-day Midwest to buy farms or congregated in such cities as Milwaukee, St. Louis and Cincinnati. In the national census of 2000, more Americans claimed German ancestry than any other group.
During the mid-1800s, a significant number of Asian immigrants settled in the United States. Lured by news of the California gold rush, some 25,000 Chinese had migrated there by the early 1850s.
The influx of newcomers resulted in anti-immigrant sentiment among certain factions of America’s native-born, predominantly Anglo-Saxon Protestant population. The new arrivals were often seen as unwanted competition for jobs, while many Catholics–especially the Irish–experienced discrimination for their religious beliefs. In the 1850s, the anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic American Party (also called the Know-Nothings) tried to severely curb immigration, and even ran a candidate, former U.S. president Millard Fillmore (1800-1874), in the presidential election of 1956.
Following the Civil War, the United States experienced a depression in the 1870s that contributed to a slowdown in immigration.
ELLIS ISLAND AND FEDERAL IMMIGRATION REGULATION
One of the first significant pieces of federal legislation aimed at restricting immigration was the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which banned Chinese laborers from coming to America. Californians had agitated for the new law, blaming the Chinese, who were willing to work for less, for a decline in wages.
For much of the 1900s, the federal government had left immigration policy to individual states. However, by the final decade of the century, the government decided it needed to step in to handle the ever-increasing influx of newcomers. In 1890, President Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) designated Ellis Island, located inNew York Harbor near the Statue of Liberty, as a federal immigration station. More than 12 million immigrants entered the United States through Ellis Island during its years of operation from 1892 to 1954.
EUROPEAN IMMIGRATION: 1880-1920
Between 1880 and 1920, a time of rapid industrialization and urbanization, America received more than 20 million immigrants. Beginning in the 1890s, the majority of arrivals were from Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. In that decade alone, some 600,000 Italians migrated to America, and by 1920 more than 4 million had entered the United States. Jews from Eastern Europe fleeing religious persecution also arrived in large numbers; over 2 million entered the United States between 1880 and 1920.
The peak year for admission of new immigrants was 1907, when approximately 1.3 million people entered the country legally. Within a decade, the outbreak ofWorld War I (1914-1918) caused a decline in immigration. In 1917, Congress enacted legislation requiring immigrants over 16 to pass a literacy test, and in the early 1920s immigration quotas were established. The Immigration Act of 1924 created a quota system that restricted entry to 2 percent of the total number of people of each nationality in America as of the 1890 national census–a system that favored immigrants from Western Europe–and prohibited immigrants from Asia.
THE IMMIGRATION AND NATIONALITY ACT OF 1965
Immigration plummeted during the global depression of the 1930s and World War II (1939-1945). Between 1930 and 1950, America’s foreign-born population decreased from 14.2 to 10.3 million, or from 11.6 to 6.9 percent of the total population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. After the war, Congress passed special legislation enabling refugees from Europe and the Soviet Union to enter the United States. Following the communist revolution in Cuba in 1959, hundreds of thousands of refugees from that island nation also gained admittance to the United States.
In 1965, Congress passed the Immigration and Nationality Act, which did away with quotas based on nationality and allowed Americans to sponsor relatives from their countries of origin. As a result of this act and subsequent legislation, the nation experienced a shift in immigration patterns. Hi Carolyn, I am at what you like to call rock bottm. I feel like there is nothing left for me to do, so ive become a gamer. Thats my biggest problem once i start gaming i cant stop. My best friend has just up and left me, I don't know what I did to make him leave, I guess he just finally realized that I'm a nobody. I don't have a close relationship with my parents, I don't have anybody to talk now, all my problems just keep getting bigger and I have no way to express them. The only thing left for me is gaming, its the only thing I feel I'm good at and the only thing I can do to relieve stress. I need your help Carolyn, help me get out of this deep depression.

Maybe you should do something different to get your mind off of gaming for awhile. I don't know if your much of a runner but if you are you should try going out for a jog or a run. One of the main things that helps me relieve stress is listening to music. Music just easies the stress and puts me in a different world. If you like sports you could go shot some hoops or throw the ball, and if our not much for physical activities then you could read a book. You could sleep and dream about different things. I guess what I'm trying to say is do something to get your mind off of gaming, not only will it help you now but it will be best for you in the long run. New York City is full of gamers, as well as every other city in the United States of America. New York is diffrent tough, they have neuro-headsets in just about every home across the state. Sam, a teenage hacker is concerned that the computers are getting minds of their owns. Who side would you join? Would you join Sam and the others and try to destroy the neuro-headsets or would you do what the rest of America is doing and join it?
Sam is played by young teen actor Josh Hutcherson, he has played major roles in the Hunger Games series. Fargus, which is Sam's best friend is played by Blake Cooper who was in the hit movie "The Maze Runner". Ryan Potter who stared in Big 6 will act as Dodge. Vienna is played by Scarlett Johansen who played in the Avengers. Jeremy Renner, Zoe Salda, Chris Patt, Rob Riggle, Grant Gustlin, Patricia French, Meagan Fox, Will Farrell, and Mark Ruffalo will be staring in one of the biggest thrillers of 2015.
Fargus, an average teenager who didn't expect to leave the beautiful place called earth. He was a kind and very polite young man. He always had a smile on his face, except for when he was gaming. That's the only time you didn't want to be around Fargus. Once he started gaming it was impossible to get him to stop. He was the definition of a game addict. Sam stated that when they would hang out he had to stay away from a computer of a gaming device or else Fargus would be glued to it. He was born in New York about 16 years ago. Growing wasn't easy for Fargus he got picked on a lot because of his weight. When Fargus was younger he met Sam and they instantly became friends. Sam was one of Fargus only friend. Fargus will be missed. He was a very kind man and we are all very sad about his passing.

Gli strateghi si organizzano in assemblee. Si decide dove dar battaglia.
Mentre gli strateghi pelloponnesiaci ragionavano sul luogo più adatto per uno scontro navale, furono riportate da un ateniese le ultime notizie. Egli annunciò che l’esercito di Serse, dopo aver dato alle fiamme la città dei Tespiesi (abbandonata dalla popolazione rifugiatasi nel Peloponneso) e aver fatto altrettanto con quella dei Plateesi, giunse ad Atene.
Una volta li’ occuparono la città deserta e nel santuario trovarono quei pochi ateniesi che tentavano di difendersi dagli assalitori dietro a barricate. I Persiani si arrestarono sull’Areopago e li strinsero d’assedio.
Nonostante gli ateniesi assediati si difendessero, mentre erano già sull'orlo della disfatta, lanciando grossi macigni addosso ai barbari a questi ultimi si rivelò un varco per accedere all’acropoli. Alcuni ateniesi allora si buttarono giù dal muro e morirono, altri si rifugiarono nella sala sacra del tempio. I persiani che erano saliti cominciarono subito una strage di supplici, quando questi giacquero a terra inermi, saccheggiarono il santuario e diedero alle fiamme l’intera acropoli.
Serse qualche giorno dopo, forse a causa di una visione avuta in un sogno magari pentitosi di aver incendiato il santuario, ordinò a degli esuli ateniesi di salire sull’acropoli e compiere dei sacrifici.

E giunge a Salamina.
Su richiesta degli ateniesi la flotta dei greci, salpata dall’Artemisio, dirige le navi verso Salamina. Il motivo di tale scelta sta nella decisione di far evacuare dall’Attica donne e bambini e anche per decidere il da farsi.
Le due alternative erano: raggiungere l’Istmo o combattere dinnanzi al Peloponneso.
Tali opzioni si basavano su questo principio: in caso di sconfitta a Salamina sarebbero stati assediati su un’isola dove non avrebbero ricevuto alcun soccorso, invece, vinti di fronte all’Istmo, avrebbero potuto rifugiarsi fra la loro gente.
Il livello di panico tra la popolazione è facilmente immaginabile. Le donne, i bambini e i vecchi, tutti evacuati sull'isola depongono tutte le loro speranze nel coraggio e abilità dei prodi guerrieri.
Le navi sono ben equipaggiate seppure sono di numero altamente inferiore a quello dei persiani.
Si sacrifica ogni ora agli Dei e lamenti si sentono in ogni dove.

i megaresi fornirono tante navi quante all’artemisio, gli ambracioti 7 e con 3 i leucadi.
Fra gli isolani, gli egineti né offrirono 30. I calcidesi 20, gli eretuesi 7, i cei con le stesse di prima, i nassi 4.
Gli stirei avevano le stesse che all’artemisio, i citni una e un pentecontere, i crotoniati una sola nave.
I meli, i sifni e i serifi parteciparono con delle triremi. I meli ne fornirono 2, i sifni e i serifi una ciascuno.
Il numero complessivo delle navi, escludendo le penteconteri, fu di 378 unità.
Temistocle ci colpisce ancora con la sua profonda conoscenza dei giochi politici e strategici.
Per non permettere ai greci di dividersi tra di loro nel momento di maggior bisogno di essere uniti, arriva ormai a “giocare sporco”.
Nella fatidica notte, manda Sicinno, suo servo, dai Medi per dire loro, fingendo di essere un traditore, di accerchiare i greci perché questi temendo la battaglia, stanno per fuggire. Intanto l’atmosfera che regna fra i strateghi riuniti a Salamina è tesa, molti sono i disaccordi sul dove dare battaglia; i contrasti portano a dispute violente. Nel frattempo nessuno dei comandanti si accorge dell’accerchiamento da parte della flotta persiana che nella notte, strategicamente cambia postazione.
Durante la riunione giunse da Egina Aristide, figlio di Lisimaco, Ateniese, che fermatosi davanti alla sala del consiglio chiamò fuori Temistocle, dimenticando l’inimicizia che prova per lui per comunicargli che mentre i Pelloponnesiaci insistevano sul dare battaglia nell’Istmo di Corinto, la flotta persiana aveva ormai accerchiato tutta la flotta greca.
Temistocle ad udir ciò si rallegrò essendo per lui splendide notizie e mandò Aristide stesso a comunicare la notizia ai greci. Questi alle prime non ci crederono, poi dopo una conferma da parte dei Teni con al comando il figlio di Sosimene, Panezio si cominciarono a preparare alla battaglia. Con questi ultimi disertori che giunsero con una trireme i greci arrivarono ad un numero di 380 navi, il che era comunque di gran lunga inferiore al numero di quelle persiane.
La mattina seguente Temistocle da ancora una volta prova delle sue qualità di stratego; con parole accorate rincuora e esorta i soldati radunati e salito l’esercito sulle navi la flotta prende il largo. Immediatamente viene assalita dai barbari.

LA TRIREME.
L'arma segreta
Ed ecco come ci appare l'elemento principale della flotta greca.
La trireme è un tipo di nave da guerra che utilizza come propulsione, oltre alla vela, tre file di rematori disposti sulle due fiancate dello scafo. La trireme compare tra il 550 e il 525 a.C., quale evoluzione della Pentecontera, per essere poi adottata dai Corinzi e, ben presto, anche da tutti i Greci.
A bordo di una trireme trova posto un equipaggio di circa 200 uomini, di cui 180 rematori, il resto dell'equipaggio è costituito da 10 fanti di marina, 4 arcieri, vari ufficiali di bordo, dal comandante e dalla figura più importante, quella del pilota, che, con la sua abilità nel manovrare il timone,decide le sorti della nave in battaglia.
Gli arcieri hanno in dotazione arco e frecce, mentre i fanti di marina, protetti da grandi scudi rotondi, elmi e corazze di bronzo, sono provvisti di lance e giavellotti. I rematori sono invece disarmati.
Leggera e con pochissimo pescaggio, così da poter essere tirata in secca ogni sera, lunga e sottile, la trireme sacrifica la stabilità e la robustezza, alla velocità e alla manovrabilità estrema.
Fragilità e instabilità pongono però alle triremi dei limiti nella navigazione, sconsigliandone alcuni utilizzi: le flotte evitano il mare aperto e la navigazione notturna, preferendo il cabotaggio diurno. L'angustia degli spazi non consente peraltro lo stivaggio di grandi provviste, rendendo necessari frequenti scali.
La notevole consistenza dell'equipaggio richiede l'adozione di notevoli cautele tese ad evitare che movimenti bruschi compromettessero la stabilità della fragile nave.
Era poi cruciale garantire la sincronia della voga: al capovoga, in piedi in posizione centrale, spetta la scansione del ritmo, coadiuvato da due ufficiali a prua e a poppa, e da un suonatore di aulos.
Le doti di agilità della trireme la rendono estremamente adatta a una manovra di speronamento che, già utilizzata in passato con altre navi, diventa tecnica di elezione per le flotte di triremi.
Il suo nome è diekplouse e consisteva in un'ardita manovra di aggiramento laterale finalizzata allo speronamento della parte poppiera e condotta, a forza di remi, da una o più navi.
SALAMINA:
"LA BATTAGLIA CHE CAMBIERA' LA STORIA."
I due eserciti si schierarono per dare inizio alla battaglia:
Di fronte agli ateniesi erano schierati i Fenici, che occupavano l'ala verso Eleusi e occidente e di fronte agli Spartani gli Ioni, disposti sull'ala verso oriente e il Pireo.
Dapprima le navi greche cominciarono a retrocedere cautamente, ma la nave di Amnia di Pallene, Ateniese, si spinse in avanti e attaccando e scontrandosi con il nemico si incastrò. Vedendo questo, le altre navi greche si scagliarono contro i barbari.
Ma ci sono diverse opinioni sul come si diede inizio alla battaglia. Alcuni dicono che a cominciare fu la nave a suo tempo inviata a prendere gli Eacidi.
E si narra anche che apparve un fantasma di donna che spronò i greci a combattere, con voce tale da farsi udire da tutto l'esercito.
SERSE: "GLI UOMINI MI SONO DIVENTATI DONNE; E LE DONNE UOMINI"
La manovra di Artemisia.
Quando ormai le forze del re erano in preda a una terribile confusione, la nave della regina Artemisia si trovò braccata da una nave attica; non poteva più sfuggire (davanti aveva altre navi amiche, la sua era la più vicina a quelle nemiche) ed ecco cosa decise di fare, e riuscì nel suo intento: inseguita dalla nave attica, speronò una nave amica di gente di Calinda, sulla quale era imbarcato il re dei Calindi in persona, Damasitimo. Dopo averla speronata e affondata, ebbe la fortuna di trarne due vantaggi: il trierarca della nave attica, vedendola assalire una nave barbara, credette che la nave di Artemisia fosse greca oppure che stesse cambiando bandiera e passando a difendere i Greci; perciò virò di bordo e attaccò altre navi.
Da una parte le riuscì così di scampare e di evitare la morte; dall´altra le toccò di veder crescere la sua stima presso Serse, pur avendo combinato un disastro e anzi proprio per questo. Pare infatti che il re, che stava osservando, si accorgesse della manovra di speronamento, e quando uno dei presenti esclamò: "Signore, guarda Artemisia come si batte bene! Ha affondato una nave nemica!", lui chiese se davvero quell'impresa era opera di Artemisia; e gli altri glielo confermarono, ben conoscendo l´insegna della nave: lo scafo distrutto fu creduto nemico. Fra l´altro, a quanto si narra, le andò anche bene che nessuno della nave di Calinda abbia potuto salvarsi per accusarla. Pare che Serse abbia allora così commentato l´informazione ricevuta:"Gli uomini mi sono diventati donne, e le donne uomini".
LO SPETTACOLO DELLA PROPRIA SCONFITTA.
Serse se lo gode dal monte vicino.
Dolore e angoscia pervadono il tratto di mare presso l'isola di Salamina al termine della cruenta battaglia.
Fluttuano tra le onde resti di navi, corpi esanimi di soldati greci e persiani.
Questa battaglia, oltre ad aver per tutti segnato il destino, ha portato sulle ali della vittoria all'Ellade la libertà e l'inizio di un periodo di pace.
I drammatici momenti vissuti dai combattenti e comandanti ci sono stati testimoniati, e noi ve li riportiamo, cari lettori, per raccontarvi delle molteplici gesta eroiche.
Artisti e pittori hanno rappresentato per voi i momenti culminanti della battaglia come questo che vedete accanto: Serse dal monte, sconfitto, invoca gli dei; Artemisia scaglia frecce e combatte astutamente; Temistocle, valoroso eroe, avanza trionfante con la protezione degli Dei che assistono il popolo greco.
Ma ecco come tutto ebbe inizio.
AMNIA DI PALLENE:
"Come ebbi il coraggio di scagliarmi per primo contro i barbari? Furono sicuramente gli Dei ad ispirarmi a decidere di essere il primo e cominciare con la mia azione una battaglia che avrebbe liberato il mio popolo dall'invasore."
ISIDOROS (soldato di Artemisia):
"Quando la mia regina decise di speronare la nave dei Calindi mi resi conto che lo faceva per la nostra salvezza. Chi giudica lei e la sua azione malvagia e traditrice, dimentica del fatto che una regina si dovrebbe preoccupare prima dei suoi sudditi e soldati e poi degli alleati"
Serse sedeva alle falde del monte che fronteggia Salamina e che si chiama Egaleo; ogni volta che vedeva qualcuno dei suoi compiere in questa battaglia qualche bella impresa, chiedeva chi fosse, e gli scrivani registravano il nome del trierarca col patronimico e la città di appartenenza.
In questa dura battaglia cadde anche lo stratego Ariabigne figlio di Dario e fratello di Serse, e perirono molti altri illustri Persiani, Medi e alleati; e anche alcuni Greci, ma pochi; sapevano nuotare infatti e quando le loro navi venivano affondate, se non morivano nella mischia, si salvavano a nuoto a Salamina; invece la gran parte dei barbari morì in mare perché non sapeva nuotare.
Le navi persiane furono nella maggior parte distrutte a Salamina, messe fuori combattimento dagli Ateniesi o dagli Egineti. Siccome i Greci combattevano con ordine e rispettando lo schieramento, i barbari, che non si erano tenuti in linea e non facevano nulla di sensato, dovevano per forza finire come finirono. Eppure erano e si rivelarono quel giorno assai più validi che all´Eubea, tutti pieni di ardore e timorosi di Serse: ognuno si sentiva addosso lo sguardo del re.
NEL MEZZO DELLA MISCHIA.
Complotti e vendette.
La situazione per i persiani andava facendosi sempre più drammatica; moltissimi morivano e le grosse navi, costrette a manovrare in uno spazio angusto, si scontravano speronandosi a vicenda.
Nel mentre della battaglia ebbero luogo alcuni episodi che ci illustrano nel miglior modo l'ipocrisia, furbizia e disonestà dei popoli che componevano l'esercito persiano, che a differenza di quello greco ebbe al suo interno delle spaccature e molti tradirono il re Serse per passare ai greci. I fenici sopratutto, furono i protagonisti di una vergognosa azione ai danni degli ioni.
Fu quando le navi della prima fila si volsero in fuga che ne andarono distrutte di più: infatti quelli schierati dietro, sforzandosi di passare davanti coi loro scafi per segnalarsi agli occhi del re con qualche bel gesto, cozzavano con le proprie contro le navi in ritirata.
In mezzo alla confusione accadde anche questo: alcuni Fenici che avevano perso le navi si recarono dal re e accusarono gli Ioni di tradimento, sostenendo di aver perso le navi per colpa loro. Ma il caso volle che gli Ioni non cadessero in disgrazia e che ai Fenici accusatori toccasse la ricompensa che segue.
Mentre essi ancora sostenevano le loro ragioni, una nave di Samotracia speronò un vascello attico. La nave attica affondava, quando sopraggiunse al'attacco una nave di Egina, che affondò quella dei Samotraci; ma i Samotraci erano lanciatori di giavellotto: scagliandoli spazzarono via dalla tolda l'equipaggio della nave che li aveva affondati, si gettarono all´arrembaggio e la conquistarono. Questo episodio salvò gli Ioni, perché Serse, vedendo che avevano compiuto un´impresa straordinaria, si rivolse ai Fenici irritato oltre misura, se la prese con loro e ordinò di tagliare la testa a tutti: non avrebbero più calunniato chi era più valoroso di loro dopo essersi comportati da vigliacchi.
GALENOS (soldato dei samotraci):
"L'azione deplorevole dei Fenici è sicuramente stata punita giustamente. Il nostro eroismo è stato premiato da Serse che fece tagliare le teste ai traditori. Chi è vigliacco non merita di vivere dopo aver calunniato i più valorosi"
RITIRATA! RITIRATA!
Il panico si impossessa dell'esercito persiano.
Intanto i barbari, messi in fuga, si defilarono in direzione del Falero e gli Egineti, appostati nello stretto, compirono imprese memorabili. Gli Ateniesi speronavano nella mischia le navi che li affrontavano o che tentavano di sottrarsi allo scontro, gli Egineti quelle che si allontanavano dalla lotta: quando una nave sfuggiva agli Ateniesi, andava a cadere fra le grinfie degli Egineti.
Fu allora che si incrociarono la nave di Temistocle, impegnata in un inseguimento, e quella di Policrito figlio di Crio, Egineta, che aveva appena speronato una nave di Sidone, la stessa che aveva catturato la vedetta egineta a Sciato e sulla quale si trovava Pitea figlio di Ischenoo, che i Persiani, ammirati dal suo valore, trattenevano a bordo benché coperto di ferite. Insomma, questa nave di Sidone che lo trasportava fu catturata assieme ai Persiani, sicché Pitea poté tornare salvo a Egina. Policrito, come vide la nave attica, riconobbe al primo sguardo le insegne della ammiraglia: allora si mise a gridare, schernendo Temistocle, rinfacciandogli l´accusa di filomedismo lanciata agli Egineti; questo gridò Policrito a Temistocle mentre speronava una nave. I barbari le cui navi si salvarono con la fuga ripararono al Falero sotto la protezione dell´esercito di terra.
"ERAVAMO POCHI E SIAMO FUGGITI" "NIENTE SCUSE, NOI ERAVAMO DI MENO"
I vincitori della battaglia accusano i persiani.
E così, in questa battaglia navale a meritare gli elogi migliori fra i Greci furono gli Egineti, e poi gli Ateniesi; individualmente Policrito di Egina e gli Ateniesi, Eumene di Anagirunte e Aminia di Pallene, che aveva dato la caccia ad Artemisia.
Se avesse saputo che su quella nave viaggiava Artemisia, non avrebbe desistito prima di catturarla o di essere lui catturato. I trierarchi ateniesi avevano ricevuto ordini in tal senso e inoltre era stata fissata una taglia di diecimila dracme per chi l'avesse presa viva: reputavano intollerabile, infatti, che una donna combattesse contro Atene. Lei, comunque, come già s´è detto, se la cavò. E anche gli altri le cui navi si erano salvate si trovarono al Falero.
Quanto ad Aristide, figlio di Lisimaco, Ateniese, ecco cosa fece costui nel pandemonio scoppiato a Salamina. Prese con sé diversi opliti che erano stati dislocati lungo la costa di Salamina, tutti di nascita ateniese, e sbarcò con loro a Psittalia e massacrarono tutti i Persiani che si trovavano su questa isoletta.
SERSE, COLPISCI ANCORA O FUGGI?
La decisione finale.
Sono pochi i prigionieri persiani rimasti, la maggior parte di loro è morta, eppure ancora credono di poter giustificare la propria rovinosa sconfitta.
Danno la colpa agli dei, al fato, a Serse, alle navi inefficaci e addirittura al numero delle proprie forze che ritengono inferiore a quello dei greci.
I nostri valorosi eroi indignati ribattono: la colpa si deve dare solo alla mancanza di coraggio e valore.
Alla fine della battaglia i Greci, tratti a riva a Salamina tutti i rottami che si trovavano ancora lì vicino, erano pronti a un secondo scontro: si aspettavano che il re utilizzasse ancora le navi rimastegli.
Serse, come si rese conto della sconfitta patita, temendo che i Greci, dietro suggerimento degli Ioni o per propria iniziativa, si portassero sull´Ellesponto per manomettere i ponti, e temendo quindi, una volta bloccato in Europa, di rischiarvi una brutta fine, meditava la ritirata.
Così finisce un episodio della nostra storia che grazie all'aiuto degli dei e al valore dei nostri guerrieri ha liberato la nostra terra dall'invasore persiano.
