When you think about mental illnesses, what’s the first thing you think of? Club shootings? School shootings? Church shootings? Concert shootings? All things we’re seeing and hearing about very often in this day and age. We associate mental illness with these things because majority of the men who have committed these crimes have pleaded insanity. Mental illness has been the excuse for their actions and the media seems to entertain this idea. But have you taken a second and thought about suicide? Has it ever crossed your mind at least once or twice when you think about mental illness? Some may say yes and others may so no but regardless of the fact it doesn’t hide that suicide is a problem that’s overlooked. Suicide is not an act of selfishness, it’s when someone falls so deep into depression they feel worthless and because they feel worthless they feel like their love ones are better off without them. Depression is one of many mental illnesses that can push someone to commit suicide. They don’t realize that they’re not a burden and that they can get help. There isn’t always signs of mental illness or contemplating suicide. For this very reason, you shouldn’t judge someone’s situations. When someone you love seems to be distance or acting funny, this isn’t an opportunity to “check them”. When you read a status or hear someone you love and care for say they are feeling depressed, that’s not when you tell them they have no reason. Help them, check on them, love them, reassure them that no matter what your there for them because you absolutely never know what is going on behind closed doors. A simple are you ok can make someone who is suffering with mental illness and contemplating suicide feel on top of the world because their silent cry for help is being heard and someone genuinely cares. If you see signs such as glassy eyes, loss of appetite, loss of interest in usual activity, fatigue, crying a lot or on mute (not talking a lot) or even having a gut feeling something just isn’t right, reach out. You don’t ever want to feel like you could have did something to prevent this action of loneliness. If they decide they just don’t want to talk, reassure them that you are there for them and you will help them in any way possible. Always be mindful that there’s someone out there whose situation is worse than yours, and sometimes it can be someone you love.
